The ninth month of the islamic lunar calendar, Ramadan, lasts for a period of 29 to 30 days. Commencement of the event is based on the moon and the number of days may vary annually. The end of the Ramadan month is followed by a celebration known as Eid ul-Fitr, where people gather to celebrate, feast, exchange good wishes and pray to Allah for his kindness. The word Ramadan comes from the Arabic word ‘ramiḍa’ / ‘ar-ramaḍ’, meaning scorching heat or dryness.
Muslims abstain themselves from consuming anything, (even a drop of water!) during the daylight hours and follow it up by breaking the fast after the sunset. They wake up quite early before dawn to have their first meal. Therefore, people observing fast should include protein rich food in their diet and drink plenty of water right up till dawn, to keep them hydrated and stay motivated about following the routine.
The fasting is obligatory for all adult Muslims except for those who are suffering from any kind of illness, pregnancy, nursing mothers, or elderly people. There are no compulsions for children to fast.
